Key Resources for Communication

Indispensable Desk Reference Books

Whether you are a professional writer or just want to be more effective in writing e-mails and letters at work and/or home there here are three reference books that every desk should have. They will help you put more power and sizzle in your writing!

1. Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary— Every desk needs an excellent dictionary. This one is exceptional. The first Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (M-W) was published in 1898, and the tenth edition had a copyright date of 1993. The eleventh edition brings many new words, a CD-ROM, and a free one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Collegiate.com, which includes the text of the dictionary as well as the Collegiate Thesaurus, Collegiate Encyclopedia, and Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary.

2. Roget International Thesaurus Indexed Edition — Every desk also needs a good Thesaurus. Roget’s Thesaurus is one of the best. More than 1,070 different categories in this comprehensive, up to date thesaurus contains 325,000 synonyms, antonyms, and related words and phrases, as well as the latest slang and commonly used foreign terms. Thumb-indexed. Soft cover.

3. The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition — by William Strunk Jr., E.B. White, Roger Angell – Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have encouraged their students to get this book since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it. It remains an extremely helpful handbook for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style. It is compact enough to fit in your pocket.

Other Writing Resources

www.m-w.com/dictionary.htm — This link is to the Merriam Webster Website. There are many resources, services and products available.

www.copyright.gov — This is a good resource for general information about copyrights. Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.

www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm — This is a good supplemental resource to the copyright website. It explores when works pass into the public domain and you may be able to use them in your writing. Note: A public domain work is a creative work that is not protected by copyright and which may be freely used by everyone. The reasons that the work is not protected include: (1) the term of copyright for the work has expired; (2) the author failed to satisfy statutory formalities to perfect the copyright or (3) the work is a work of the U.S. Government.
